Breeding

Standard and Registration

The Breeding of the New Forest pony is controlled by the New Forest Verderers. This body judge suitable stallions to be released onto the forest for breeding.

In order that the breed can be kept to its pure form the New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society monitor the ponies through a registration scheme. The grand names seen on the ponies for sale will be those where the Sire and/or Dam are registered with the Society.

Further information on both these organisations can be found via our links page.

The first part of the registered names (the ‘prefix’) belong to the registered owners. ‘
Fernyknap’ belongs to a fifth generation New Forest Commoner.

The Pony

The New Forest pony has certain criteria which define the breed.

Size
The pony should not exceed 14.2hh (59“ / 148cm).

Colour
Ponies will not be of mixed colour i.e. Piebald, Skewbald. White markings over pink skin are also not allowed. Whilst there are ponies with this colouring they are not eligible for registration
